ANZAC Day - Lest We Forget

Hunter shared photographs, medals and a uniform of his Great Grandpa Harry. He served in World War 1 and 2. He was awarded many awards, including an OBE.

Dylan shared the poppies that he made to commemorate Anzac Day.

Olivia brought her family's book, 'The Story of a Pioneering Family - Anders Persson and Phoebe Alderson'. In this book, Olivia shared the story of Matin Persson who was the youngest Kiwi known to have died at Gallipoli. He was 17 years old. Martin's grave is one of only 10 identified graves at Chunuk Bair. His brother John fought with him on Chunuk Bair and was wounded. John Persson wrote a diary of his experiences in World War One and these diary entries are to be used to create a movie/documentary in the near future.

Lily shared some postcards sent from her Great, Great Grandad to his wife. He sent many postcards from different countries from around the world. Lily even read out some of the messages he sent his loved ones!

Dylan shared about his Great-Grandad (his nana's dad). His name was Harold William Newsham. Harold was a tail-gunner in the RAF in World War 2 (1939-1945). He died in 1977 aged 59. Dylan found out this information by talking with his nana and wrote down what he found out.

Charlotte shared information about her Grandad Paddy and brought his medals to share with us. Grandad Paddy served in Africa, Greece and Crete. He was eventually captured and put into a 'Prisoner of War' camp. It was very unpleasant.
Charlotte shared two medals that Grandad Paddy was awarded (shown below). These were the 'North Africa Star' - for service in North Africa and the '1939-1945 Star'. This was awarded for active service shortened by capture or injury.

Tom brought an Anzac story to school called Anzac Day Parade. It is a story about a boy who attends an Anzac Dawn Service for the first time with his dad. We used it as our shared reading in class. He also found a newspaper article from the local paper about Gallipoli and the Anzac Day ceremonies this year.

Ella shared about a 2015 Commemorative Coin that her Dad had given her.  It marks the 100th Anniversary of the ANZAC War.
Further facts:
- 25th April 2015 marks 100 years since the ANZAC War.
- This is the first NZ coin to have colour added (black).
- Only 1,000,000 coins have been minted.
- The coin features a NZ & Australian soldier brought together by the hardships of Gallipoli.
- The background design includes Mangopare Patterns (Hammerhead Shark) symbolising strength and determination.

Finn shared information about his Great Uncle and bought in a portrait of him in uniform to share with Tautoko pod.  He shared that his Great Uncle had been a teacher, but during War was a gunner.  He was 22 years old when he died.

Hayley and Olivia each shared a story they had written about ANZAC Day and shared some facts with the Tautoko Pod.

Ollie shared about his Great Grandad, who was in the Navy during the War.
Ollie bought along the Navy Jacket and Hat that his Great Grandad wore, and shared a book that his Uncle Leon had made about his Grandad going off to War.
Ollie was proud and pleased to learn more about his family history.  Have you learnt anything new about your family in regards to ANZAC Day?

ANZAC Day this year marks the 100th Anniversary for our ANZAC's and Tautoko has been looking into the history of this event and how it relates to us today.
Below you can see some photos of us connecting to the past and expressing what we see, feel and think through a variety of activities.
